Alon Levin (°1975, Ramat Gan, IL) The Power of Power is een analytisch onderzoek naar de betekenis van symbolen en doet dit aan de hand van een case study over de Europese Unie. De relatie tussen de stabiliteit van een vlag en de tijdelijk van een democratische en dus wisselende regeringssamenstelling is complex. The Power of Power houdt die afspraken tegen het licht en trekt consequent een vergelijkend onderzoek door naar determinatie en afwijkend gedrag. De basis voor The Power of Power wordt gevormd door een beschrijving van de vlaggen van 25 lidstaten van de Europese Unie. Over de beschrijving van de vlaggen worden vier verschillende rasters gelegd. Het eerste onderzoeksniveau biedt een beschrijving van de regerende coalities in het betreffende land. Vier pancartes tonen de verhoudingen tussen de verschillende coalities in hun nationale verschijningsvormen. De 4 volgende pancartes bieden een beschrijving van de vormelijke samenstelling van de vlaggen en combineert de resultaten ervan met de kleursamenstelling van de coalities die erachter schuilgaan. Vervolgens worden de politieke coalities van de landen in een comparatief onderzoek gereduceerd tot grondverhoudingen tussen de niveaus van het nationale (vormelijke) en het politieke. Op 8 tafels worden alle verhoudingen in drie dimensies en 13 kleuren (één voor elke bestaande coalitie of vlag), als een modulair systeem tentoon gespreid. The Power of Power gaat over het maken van regels, het implementeren van systemen en de zelfdestructie die daar inherent aan is. Tastbaar uiteengezet worden machtsverhoudingen vertaald naar het niveau van een spel. De stapeling roept miniatuurslagvelden voor de geest en als uitgewerkt syteem is The Power of Power één groot bureaucratisch apparaat dat vormelijk een weerspiegeling is van wat het tracht uit te beelden: een confederatie van autonome maar intern geschakeerde entiteiten.

Alon Levin (b. 1975, Ramat Gan, Israel) The Power of Power, 2005 The Power of Power is an analytic investigation into the meaning of symbols. It does this on the basis of a case study of the European Union. The relation between the permanence of a flag and the temporary nature of a democratic, and thus changing governing coalition is complex. The Power of Power holds these agreements up to the light and proceeds with a logical and comparative investigation into determination and anomalous conduct. The basis for The Power of Power is a depiction of the flags of the 25 member states of the European Union. Four different grids are laid over the depiction of the flags. The first level of investigation offers a graphic representation of the governing coalitions in the country involved. Four charts show the relations among the various coalitions in their national manifestations. The following four charts afford a representation of the formal composition of the flags, and combine the results of this with the colour compositions of the coalitions which lie behind them. Then, in a comparative investigation, the political coalitions of the countries are reduced to basic relationships between the national (formal) and political levels. All the relationships are displayed as a modular system, in three dimensions and 13 colours (one for each existing coalition or flag) on eight tables. The Power of Power is about the making of rules, the implementation of systems and the self-destruction that is inherent in this. Set out concretely, power relations translate at the level of a game. The amassing calls to mind miniature battlefields, and as a detailed system The Power of Power is one massive bureaucratic apparatus which in its form reflects what it tries to illustrate: a confederation of autonomous and internally multi-hued entities. Driven by the conviction that a connection between symbolism and reality leads to transparency, Alon Levin seeks to exchange representative forms for the visualisation of information in order to thus give shape to a view of the world that is not fed by rhetoric, but by information and observation. The installation bears witness to the elusiveness of concepts such as identity, and the organisation of a completely democratic society. There is always one way between two symbols or two extremes: on two television screens ‘The Making of a Symbol’ shows how, by taking bits from the different sides and corners of four wooden squares, a symbol is created. |
