Lygia Clark
During the first 16 years of her career the Brazilian visual artist Lygia Clark (1920-1988) devoted herself to the art of painting and sculpture. From 1963 onwards she developed propositions in which she tried to approach the body in its ability to be affected by others. Her work no longer existed as an object but as an event within the poetical relationship between spectators and the world. As Clark’s works are tributary to experience, they cannot be presented by means of the objects used or as a documentation of the actions performed. With this information in mind Suely Rolnik took up the challenge to create a memory of these experiences and sensations by filming 66 interviews recorded in Brazil, the United States and France. The result is a series of sometimes paradoxical, dissonant en heterogeneous visions. They draw a picture of the unique oeuvre of Lygia Clark and the Brazilian and French context in which it was created. After the exhibitions in Nantes (2005) and Sao Paolo (2006) Jan Mot is presenting the interviews in his gallery in Brussels.
Workshop at Extra City
During the workshop the meaning of Clarck’s work for contemporary dancers is examined by psychoanalyst Suely Rolnik and physical therapist Hubert Godard. The workshop will not only consist of discussions about gesture and its perception but it will also include a more practical aspect. Professional dancers as well as anyone interested in dance, gesture and performance are welcome to the workshop. Registration is required as only 40 persons can take part.
