We Suck Young Blood
Because time goes fast and there is no way to control it, Harmonie is approaching its second birthday this December! Therefore, Harmonie curated We suck young blood, a retrospective exhibition on show at Extra City Kunsthal from 7 until 9 December. We suck young blood will include new work by artists that have helped shape Harmonie from the beginning, an overview of Harmonie’s eight released issues, and an audio compilation of the Radio Harmonie broadcasts at Radio Centraal. The opening will feature live performances and artists’ interventions, and we will present an exclusive exhibition issue of Harmonie, a special edition which will soon be a collector’s item.
We Suck Young Blood is curated by Eva Geurs, Laurence Scherz, Isabelle Vanhoutte and Jesse Van Winden, and designed by Renée Simons
What is Harmonie?
Harmonie is a bimonthly free multiple-like magazine featuring work by young artists, poets and designers. The only fixed perimeters are the A4- sized brown envelopes, in which the contributions need to fit, and a theme which changes every issue. Harmonie works with an open call for artists, inviting images, texts and objects. Among the contributions are always unique pieces, which is workable for the contributors as each issue is restricted to 200 numbered copies. The magazine is for free and can be picked up in several places (galleries, libraries, bars, etc.) in Antwerp, Ghent, and Amsterdam. Besides the magazine, Harmonie hosted a show on Radio Centraal (an experimental radio station based in Antwerp) from July 2011 to August 2012: Radio Harmonie. We broadcast interviews with artists and music in correlation with the issues’ themes.
The future of Harmonie
From March 2013, Harmonie will appear four times a year. Every issue will consist of contributions revolving around the oeuvre of a single artist, thus gaining a more concrete focus. The artists, writers and designers will be selected in two ways: through a call for proposals and in dialogue with the central artist. Harmonie’s cornerstones will remain: a brown envelope, size A4, and an edition of 200 copies.
