Extra City Kunsthal moves to a new venue in Antwerp-Berchem
Extra City Kunsthal moves to a new venue, located at Eikelstraat 25 in Berchem, Antwerp. The building, previously known as ‘Wasserij Goossens’, was one of Antwerp’s largest industrial laundries. Only five minutes away from the Antwerp-Berchem railway station, in the vicinity of DeSingel and LLS387, Extra City’s new venue is currently refurbished and will be inaugurated this autumn.
Between 2006 and 2012, Extra City Kunsthal was located on Tulpstraat in the Northern district, were it organised over 70 contemporary art exhibitions and projects. Artistic director Mihnea Mircan is pleased with the new location: “The new location was selected for its topographic position, but also for its potential to accommodate a more diverse range of activities, from exhibitions and debates, lectures and screenings, to guest projects and temporary events in the field of design, fashion, music and performance.”
Additionally, Extra City Kunsthal wishes to play a social role in its new neighborhood. Thanks to the presence of a café and small cinema on its premises, and to collaborations with other cultural initiatives in Berchem, Extra City will propose to its visitors different formats of interaction with art, as well as of sociability.
Later this spring, Extra City Kunsthal will communicate its artistic program for the 2013-14 season.
