19 oktober 2008 – 4 januari 2009 De eerste Brussel Biënnale opent op 19 oktober en toont op verschillende locaties in Brussel zeventig kunstenaars in zeven tentoonstellingen. Artistiek directeur Anselm Franke ontwierp voor Extra City het project Letter to Leopold en vroeg kunstenaars, schrijvers en architecten te reflecteren over de geschiedenis van België, zijn geglobaliseerde dimensie in de moderniteit en zijn huidige bijdrage en implicaties voor Europa en een Europees beleid. Letter to Leopold is een zoektocht naar de mogelijkheden van kunst om 'tot het verleden te spreken'.

19 October 2008 – 4 January 2009 The first Brussels Biennial opens on 19 October and shows on various locations in Brussels seventy artists in seven exhibitions. Extra City contributes with the project Letter to Leopold, curated by its artistic director Anselm Franke. He brings together artists, writers and architects in a reflection on Belgium's colonial history in a global context, its present day legacy and implications for Europe and the European policies. Letter to Leopold is an exploration of art's possibilities to 'speak to the past'.

Vrijdag 14 november om 20.00 Lezing in het kader van de tentoonstelling Mother's Day van Smadar Dreyfus. Mladen Dolar (1951) is een Sloveense filosoof, cultuurtheoreticus en filmcriticus. Samen met Slavoj Žižek, Rastko Močnik en Alenka Zupančič is hij medeoprichter van de psychoanalytische school van Ljubljana. In 2006 publiceerde Dolar A Voice and Nothing More, een gerenommeerde en invloedrijke studie over de culturele betekenis van de stem. De lezing levert een context voor het werk van Smadar Dreyfus rond geluid en stem, en positioneert het binnen een debat dat zowel theorie als kunst omvat. Engels gesproken |
Friday 14 November 2008 at 20.00 Lecture in conjunction with the exhibition Mother's Day by Smadar Dreyfus Mladen Dolar (1951) is a Slovenian philosopher, cultural theorist and film critic. Together with Slavoj Žižek, Rastko Močnik and Alenka Zupančič he is the co-founder of the Ljubljana school of psychoanalysis. In 2006, Dolar published the widely acclaimed A Voice and Nothing More, an influential study of the cultural significance of the voice. In de vorm van twee avondlezingen door curator Anselm Franke wordt Mimétisme (Extra City, winter 2008) voorgesteld in het kader van het Feasting or Flying festival in Hebbel am Ufer (HAU). Feasting or Flying onderzoekt visuele kunstpraktijken in theater en presenteert werk van o.a. Thomas Demand, Harun Farocki, Phil Collins en Keren Cytter.

Mimétisme (Extra City, winter 2008) will be presented in the form of two evening lectures by curator Anselm Franke in the context of the festival Feasting or Flying at Hebbel am Ufer (HAU). Feasting or Flying explores visual art practices in relation to theatre and presents works by Thomas Demand, Harun Farocki, Phil Collins and Keren Cytter among others.
