Vrijdag 12 september om 19.00 bar geopend tot middernacht We zijn verheugd over het feit dat nog twee initiatieven voor hedendaagse beeldende kunst, besloten hebben in de Tulpstraat neer te strijken. De kunstenaarsorganisatie NICC en het onafhankelijke kunstinitiatief Error One bundelen de krachten met Extra City en geven samen hun gewicht aan een dynamische plek voor hedendaagse beeldende kunst in de voormalige John Martin's bottelarij in Antwerpen Noord. Met behoud van de eigen identiteit en missies, streven de drie initiatieven naar een synergie bij het vervolgen van hun gemeenschappelijke doelstelling om (jonge) beeldende kunst en cultuur op lokaal, nationaal en internationaal niveau te promoten. |
Friday 12 September at 19.00 bar open until midnight We are proud to announce that two more initiatives of contemporary art have settled in the premises in the Tulpstraat 79 in Antwerp. The artist-run institution NICC and the independent initiative Error One join forces with Extra City in the creation of a dynamic space for contemporary visual art in the former bottling plant of John Martin in Antwerp North. In keeping their distinct identities and missions, the three organisations strive for synergy and accentuation in the promotion of contemporary art and culture on a local, regional and international scale. |

13 september – 8 november 2008 Mother's Day door de kunstenaar Smadar Dreyfus (1963, Tel Aviv, woont en werkt in Londen) is ontstaan aan de huidige Israëlisch-Syrische demarcatielijn op de Golanhoogte. Door het uitblijven van een vredesakkoord, betekent deze bestandslijn al sinds tientallen jaren ook een geografische scheidslijn voor de hier levende Druzengemeenschap. De kern van deze imposante audiovisuele installatie bestaat uit geluidsopnames tijdens de jaarlijkse viering van de Syrische "Moederdag": dialogen tussen moeders aan de door Israël gecontroleerde zijde en hun studerende dochters en zonen die vanuit Damascus komen en zich verzamelen op de zogenoemde "Shouting Hill" aan de Syrische zijde. Hun stemmen, versterkt door een daarvoor ingericht geluidssysteem, overspannen de ruimte van de vallei in hun streven naar intimiteit, en geven zo vorm aan deze afgedwongen scheidingslijn. Na haar indrukwekkende installatie Lifeguards (die in première ging op de 9de Internationale Biënnale van Istanbul, 2005), vormt Mother's Day het volgende deel in het onderzoek van Dreyfus naar de rol van de stem zowel in de vorming van omstreden openbare ruimtes, alsook in de functie van bemiddelaar tussen individu en collectief en de implicaties daarvan voor het uitwisselen van culturele gezichtspunten. Smadar Dreyfus studeerde aan de Royal College of Art en de Slade School of Fine Art, Londen. Haar werk was te zien op internationale tentoonstellingen en solotentoonstellingen bij de IKON Gallery Off-site, Birmingham, 2005, en de Victoria Miro Gallery, Londen, in 2006. Recentelijk toonde ze ook haar werk in Trial Balloons in het Museo de Arte Contemporàneo de Castilla y León (MUSAC), Spanje 2006, en op de 9de Internationale Biënnale van Istanbul, 2005. Over haar werk zijn artikelen verschenen in onder meer ArtForum, Contemporary, Camera Austria en Art Monthly. |
13 September – 8 November 2008 Mother's Day by Smadar Dreyfus (1963 Tel Aviv, lives and works in London) originates at the Israeli-Syrian ceasefire line in the Golan Heights, across which the local Druze community has been geographically separated for several decades in the absence of a peace agreement. At the heart of this audiovisual installation are sound recordings of dialogues on the annual Syrian 'Mother's day' celebration, between mothers on the Israeli-controlled side of the ceasefire line and their student daughters and sons who arrived from Damascus to what is known as the 'Shouting Hill' on the Syrian side. Exchanging greetings via a sound system set up for the occasion, these voices enact an imposed boundary, striving for intimacy across the geography of the valley. Following on from her large scale installation Lifeguards (2005), Mother's Day is part of Dreyfus' investigation into the role of the voice in the constitution of contested public spaces, as well as its function as a mediator between individual and collective and its implication in the negotiation of cultural perspective. Smadar Dreyfus studied at the Royal College of Art and the Slade School of Fine Art, London. Her work has been shown internationally and in solo exhibitions at IKON Gallery Off-site, Birmingham, 2005, and the Victoria Miro Gallery, London, in 2006. Sinds 2005 organiseert Error One tentoonstellingen met jonge en aankomende lokale en internationale kunstenaars op verschillende locaties in Antwerpen en daarbuiten. Sinds het voorjaar van 2008, resideert Error One met haar burelen in Extra City, waar het het project Shadow Cabinet door Vincent Meessen realiseerde. Error#10 is de eerste tentoonstelling van een reeks driemaandelijkse platformen voor hedendaagse kunst in het gebouw van Extra City. Annabel Elgar, NG, Wouter Van der Hallen, Andy Wauman bijten de spits af. |
Since 2005, Error One has been organising exhibitions with contributions from young and upcoming artists, both local and international, in different locations in Antwerp and elsewhere. In spring 2008, Error One relocated its offices to Extra City, where they organised Shadow Cabinet, a project by Vincent Meessen. Error #10 is the first of a series of three-monthly platforms for contemporary art hosted in the Extra City building. Annabel Elgar, NG, Wouter Van der Hallen and Andy Wauman will make the start. |

NICC is een autonome organisatie van en voor kunstenaars, die de kunstenaarspraxis in België promoot en zijn leden professionele ondersteuning biedt. Onder de nieuwe leiding van Guillaume Bijl, Koen van den Broek, Wim Catrysse, Rinus Van De Velde, Wim Waelput, Nathalie Hunter, Lode Geens en Timothy Segers werd besloten dat de Tulpstraat de ideale plek zou zijn om de tentoonstellingsactiviteit van het NICC op te voeren. Vanaf september zal het NICC de nieuwe tentoonstellingsruimte betrekken, die door middel van een brug over de Tulpstraat met Extra City verbonden is. De openingstentoonstelling heet dan ook A bridge too far en toont werk van Sarah en Charles, Filip Gilissen, Walter Swennen, Philippe Van Snick, Philippe Van Wolputte, Kris Vleeschouwer en Hans Wuyts. |
The NICC is an autonomous organisation from and for artists in Belgium promoting artistic practice and providing professional support. Under the new directorship of Guillaume Bijl, Koen van den Broek, Wim Catrysse, Rinus Van De Velde, Wim Waelput, Nathalie Hunter, Lode Geens and Timothy Segers, NICC also chose the Tulpstraat as a location to extend their exhibition activities. The future exhibition space of the NICC is connected with Extra City through a bridge that spans the Tulpstraat and that belongs to the former industrial complex. Hence, A bridge too far as the title of the opening exhibition which presents work by Sarah and Charles, Filip Gilissen, Walter Swennen, Philippe Van Snick, Philippe Van Wolputte, Kris Vleeschouwer and Hans Wuyts. |

19 oktober 2008 – 4 januari 2009 De eerste Brussel Biënnale opent op 19 oktober, vijftig jaar na het einde van de wereldtentoonstelling in 1958. Ze is samengesteld uit individuele tentoonstellingen gemaakt door acht hedendaagse kunstinstellingen, met bijdragen van zestig internationale kunstenaars. Anselm Franke ontwierp voor Extra City een project onder de titel Letter to Leopold en vroeg verschillende kunstenaars te reflecteren over de geschiedenis van België, zijn geglobaliseerde dimensie in de moderniteit en zijn huidige bijdrage en implicaties voor Europa en een Europees beleid. In de tentoonstelling Letter to Leopold wordt er over dit historisch erfgoed gereflecteerd met behulp van esthetische strategieën die het structureren van het politiek imaginaire onderzoeken. Welke relaties zijn ingebed in de beelden en verhalen die de geschiedenis bemiddelen? En welke relaties houden ze in of maken ze mogelijk? De format van de 'brief' werpt de kwestie op van de persoonlijke positie van waaruit gesproken wordt. Hij reflecteert over de manier waarop het initiële adres een relatie uitlokt en bepaalt en vraagt naar de mogelijkheden om tot het verleden te 'spreken'. De lijst van deelnemende kunstenaars zal in september op onze website aangekondigd worden. |
19 October 2008 – 4 January 2009 The first Brussels Biennial opens on October 19, fifty years after the World Fair came to its end. The biennial is made up of individual exhibitions by eight contemporary art institutions, presenting work from sixty international artists in exhibition venues situated along the north-south railway axis in Brussels. As Extra City's contribution within the Biennial, Anselm Franke organises a project called Letter to Leopold, which departs from a reflection on Belgium's colonial history in a global context, and investigates its present day legacy and implications for Europe and European policies. The format of the 'letter' raises the question of the personal speaking position. What relationships are embedded in pictures and narratives by which history is mediated? And what possible relationships do they foreclose or empower? The 'letter' reflects the way in which the initial address induces and establishes a relationship, and asks about the possibilities to 'speak to' the past. The list of participants will be announced on our website in September. |
